This article analyzes the aspects of reading and writing mobilized by sixth-grade elementary students while solving a problem involving the concept of proportionality. The qualitative research was conducted with 29 students from a public school in Diadema/SP, based on the Teaching-Learning-Assessment methodology through Problem Solving. The analysis, guided by Discursive Textual Analysis, revealed difficulties in attentive reading of problem statements and in the production of conceptual justifications. The results indicate that reading and writing practices should not be seen as peripheral skills but as structuring dimensions of mathematical thinking. The study reaffirms the formative potential of Problem Solving and suggests expanding research on mathematical language across different concepts and school contexts.
