By exploring a comic book as a narrative framework for problem-solving, this article demonstrates how teachers can plan their work so that young children develop strategies for counting, making choices based on criteria, and organizing possibilities, while experiencing a storyline that seeks to foster combinatorial reasoning. The data for this qualitative case study, conducted with 24 students in a preschool class, were gathered through observation of their school routine, planning and developing a teaching sequence, and recording interactions between them. These elements demonstrate that intentional work with mathematics in childhood, mediated by comic books as a specific problem-solving activity, fosters children’s participation in problem-solving strategies and highlights the role of teachers in planning lessons that combine language, imagination, and mathematics, expanding their repertoire of experiences and interest.
