Abstract

In this work are presented partial results of a research that has as its purpose to analyze the skills and abilities related to the creation and resolution of problems relating to numerical sequences in the construction of figurated numbers. Students of a Chemical Engineering course, enrolled in a discipline that addresses the topic numerical sequences participated in this research. Students were challenged to create and solve problems about triangular figured Numbers. The data were obtained from the students’ productions and were analyzed considering the previously established categories related to the mathematical structure of the problem, according to Malaspina (2018) and mathematical skills, following the ideas of Trejo et al. (2013). The results showed that most students have difficulties to elaborate problems, however, some students created and solved relevant problems indicating that the activities provided the development of mathematical skills and creativity.
