The article aims to analyze the learning environments identified in a mathematical modeling activity on the Bolsa Família Program, developed in a school in the countryside of Bahia. The research is anchored in studies of field
education, critical mathematics education, and mathematical modeling from a sociocritical perspective. Data were produced through document analysis of the activity proposed for a high school class. Learning environments
established in the relationship between the list of exercises, landscapes of investigation, and references to pure mathematics, semi-reality, and real life were used as analytical categories. The results show that the mathematical modeling activity can be proposed in the learning environment as landscapes of investigation in the context of field education, based on themes that discuss rural workers’ way of life and work, social programs, and the struggle for affirmative public policies in the Brazilian rural areas.
