The article presented here aims to investigate the teaching of humanities among portuguese-brazilian benedictines, particularly the teaching of philosophy between the 17th and 18th centuries, a period in wich the provisions contained in the Constitutiones monachorum nigrorum ordinis Sancti Patri Benedicti Regnorum Portugalliae, dated 1629, were in force as regulations for the Benedictines colleges. Using this document as our object of study along wich bibliographic research on the theme and text analysis as methodological contributions, we seek to answer the following question: what are the characteristics of the teaching of philosophy among portuguese-brazilian benedictines between the 17th and 18th centuries? Through a critical approch on the norms, we identified that their main objective was the restoration and maintenance of the prestige of the order, that the prescribed pedagogical practices aimed at disciplining students and internationalizing the intellectual production of future teachers. Nevertheless, we understand that there was a relaxation in the practical application of these norms, at least in Brazil.
