Abstract

Theology’s status as a science is still little known. In Brazil, its recognition by the Law of Guidelines and Bases of Education occurred twice, in 1980 and 1996, respectively. Within the plurality of scientific knowledge, theology is among the hermeneutical sciences. The scientific nature of theology offers Christian living and pastoral practice criteria for discernment and systematization, enabling an adequate understanding of reality. Theology, as a science, is distinguished by the act of faith of those who dedicate themselves to it. The validity of its apologetic character highlights the need for an increasingly mature foundation, capable of dialogue in an increasingly pluralistic context. When accompanied by theological knowledge, Christian life becomes even more challenging, given the critical consciousness that emerges from the Gospel.
