A review of biodegradable alternatives for mulching film apllications

Abstract

This article reviews the literature on biodegradable mulch films for agricultural use, evaluating their viability as an alternative to conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic films. The analysis covers studies involving polymeric materials such as the commercial Agrobiofilm, starch-based biopolymers, and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends, emphasizing mechanical properties, biodegradation in soil, and agronomic performance. The results reveal agronomic performance similar to LDPE in terms of yield and soil coverage, but with limitations regarding field durability and control of the degradation rate. On the other hand, higher water vapor permeability and biodegradability highlight environmental benefits, despite operational challenges in long-cycle crops. Biodegradable films emerge as a promising alternative to LDPE, provided that mechanical performance, stability during cultivation, and controlled degradation under varying environmental conditions are balanced.
