Abstract

In this article, we give continuity to the description of manuscripts that contain the philosophical work bequeathed by the Benedictine Friar Gaspar da Madre de Deus (1715-1800). The work received the title Philosophia platonica seu cursus philosophicus, rationalem, naturalem et transnaturalem philosophiam, sive Logicam, Physicam et Metaphysicam, complectens. The second part of his philosophical course is now characterized, that is, his “Physics” or “Natural Philosophy.” In this sense, the article brings a detailed Table of Contents containing all divisions and subdivisions of the “Natural Philosophy,” based on a study of the original manuscript, as well as the Latin transcription of its first lines. Moreover, we provide a short thematic characterization of Frei Gaspar’s course, which uses Books I and II of Aristotle’s Physics as a basis. By so doing, we attempt to minimally outline Frei Gaspar’s eclectic scholasticism, as well as the reception of topics of modern philosophy in 18th century Brazil.
