TOWARDS THE TRUTH: ENLIGHTENMENT AS A SPIRITUAL PATH IN THE THOUGHT OF SAINT BONAVENTURE

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the concept of illumination as a spiritual path in the thought of Saint Bonaventure (1221-1274), with particular emphasis on its role in guiding the soul toward ultimate truth. Bonaventure’s theological and philosophical framework integrates neoplatonic elements into Christian doctrine, presenting illumination as both an epistemological and mystical process. Drawing on an analysis of central aspects of Itinerarium mentis in Deum (The Journey of the mind to God), the study examines how the ascent to divine truth unfolds through stages of purification, contemplation, and union with God. It also addresses the relationship between reason, faith, and divine grace, arguing that Bonaventure’s doctrine of illumination transcends a merely rationalist epistemology by situating knowledge within the transformative experience of divine light. The findings seek to underscore the relevance of Bonaventure’s thought for contemporary discussions on the integration of faith and reason in the pursuit of truth.
