THE PLACE OF THE HUMANITIES IN THE FACE OF ADVANCING TECHNOLOGIES

Abstract

This study aimed to understand and discuss the place of the humanities in the context of technological advancement, to reflect on their importance, and to analyze the impact of technology on human life. An integrative review of Brazilian literature published between 2018 and 2023 was conducted using the Google Scholar and CAPES databases, with the descriptors “humanity” and “technology.” After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, nine articles were selected. Qualitative analysis of the data led to the identification of two thematic categories: the role and the importance of the humanities. The results indicate that the humanities play a key role in fostering critical citizenship and promoting reflection on the relational and constitutive dimensions of human beings. From this perspective, the humanities seek to maintain a critical scientific approach without denying the contributions of technology to human well-being, such as disease prevention and the enhancement of leisure time. However, the continuous advancement of technology, coupled with the devaluation of the humanities, may lead to the dehumanization of social relationships and human consciousness, resulting in the loss of self-reflection and creative capacity - essential elements of human fulfillment.
