The central aim of this article is to analyze the construction of the protagonist character Naziazeno Barbosa in the novel Os Ratos by Dyonelio Machado, based on Foucault’s proposals regarding the link between discourse and power. Analyzing the work from this point of view leads to a deeper reflection to understand the power of discourse that materializes ideologies and its circular effect on the positions interesting to the political groups and dominant classes in the Vargas government. We also seek to understand the construction of a fragile and anhistorical character absorbed in the search for a solution to his financial problems, hostage to time, political, and monetary power within the established capitalist logic. The central question revolves around how the power of discourse crosses Naziazeno in the 1930s, leading him to silence and making it impossible for him to be critically aware of himself and the reality surrounding him.
