Abstract

Nanotechnology emerges as a promising solution to improve the properties of asphalt pavements, increasing their durability, resistance, and sustainability. The use of nanomaterials can optimize adhesion between asphalt components, reduce environmental impacts, and improve performance in extreme conditions. The combination of nanotechnology with recyclable materials and renewable energies offers a more ecological and economically viable approach to paving. These advances contribute directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the targets for resilient infrastructure (SDG 9), sustainable cities (SDG 11), and climate action (SDG 13). The objective of this study was to conduct an integrative literature review, based on the analysis of articles published between 2014 and 2024 in the Web of Science, on nanotechnology in sustainable and recyclable asphalt pavements. Fourteen relevant articles were selected after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The studies found showed that incorporating nanocomposites with recyclable materials results in more durable pavements, with better performance at high temperatures, resistance to rutting, and greater stability, favoring more ecological and resilient solutions for road engineering. In summary, it is observed that the use of nanomaterials in asphalt pavements represents a promising frontier for sustainable civil engineering, with the potential to extend the durability of roads and reduce environmental impacts. However, future studies should consider the large-scale economic viability and the complete life cycle of these nanocomposites to consolidate their practical application.
